Grass Cloth – An Interior Gem

A hot commodity on the interior design scene with its ability to exude a refined and calming feel, seagrass or grass cloth wallpaper renowned as the epitome of coastal interior luxe by the Hampton’s interior, is now making its textured mark on the Australian interior-scape as the hottest feature wall trend since timber panelling.

With more interior shows featuring raw and natural materials as main focal features to a space – grass cloth made from natural materials such as hemp, jute, arrowroot grass, bamboo and raffia is back in vogue.

As seen in Home Beautiful

Woven strands of natural fibres are stripped from raw material and attached to rice paper using thin cotton threads – making for the wallcovering to be lightweight and delicate.

When hanging wallpaper, the fundamental rule is to match the wallpaper so that the overall effect hides any seams and joins. Grass cloth, on the other hand, displays its joins loud and proud as it’s impossible to match grass cloth due to the varying nature and size of its’ strands.

While grass cloth’s overall effect is unparalleled, there are some minor things to consider.

In general for all types of grass cloth, water is an enemy and can often lead to severe watermarks. We only recommend you use grass cloth in the bathroom if it is well ventilated and avoid areas behind the water basin and bath. Some designers have successfully found ways around this by incorporating an aesthetic mix of timber panelling or tiling on the lower wall while grass  cloth features on the upper half.

Using grass cloth is a multi-sensory experience. Not only is it visually stunning, but buyers should know that grass cloth also has a faint earthy and fibrous scent similar to rope.

Another important consideration with dark dyed grass cloths, is to avoid direct sunlight as this may cause fading. Of course, there are ways around this if your windows are UV filtered.

Slight variations of colour and texture are natural characteristics of handcrafted grass cloth wallpaper.  Plan your installation by first opening the rolls and checking the shading. Then lay out the strips, reversing them to allow for subtle shading variations, and hang in a planned sequence.

As with most wallpaper hanging, the preparation of the walls is vital to getting the best results. Remove any old wallpaper using Metylan Wallpaper remover and make sure that the walls are dry and clean.

Following this, size your walls prior to hanging your grass cloth. If in doubt, or if you require more information on how to hang this product, do not hesitate to contact your retailer.
